Hindi Remington GAIL Keyboard Layout: Complete Guide for Govt Typing Exams

Remington GAIL (developed originally in consultation with GAIL India) is a keyboard layout that maps keys according to traditional Hindi typewriter conventions while generating modern, universally compatible Unicode Devanagari text (Mangal font).

Unlike legacy mechanical typewriters, which produced non-standard font encodings, Remington GAIL works natively within modern operating systems and web applications. It remains the gold standard for several state judicial services, High Courts (such as Allahabad, Rajasthan, MP), and state eligibility tests (such as MP CPCT).

Many candidates mistakenly believe that Remington GAIL and Kruti Dev are completely different systems. In reality:

• The Finger Key Mapping is identical: If you press d in Kruti Dev, it produces क. In Remington GAIL, pressing d also produces क.
• The Output Encoding is different: Kruti Dev outputs an ASCII visual representation that requires the Kruti Dev font file to be viewed. Remington GAIL outputs standard Unicode (Mangal / Nirmala UI) that works natively on web pages, PDFs, and all digital platforms.
• Half-Letter Behavior: In Kruti Dev, half letters had dedicated single keys (e.g. k for क vs d for क्). In modern Unicode Remington GAIL, you type the base letter and attach the Halant (+ key) to form conjuncts.

2. Key Travel Familiarity: Practice on standard desktop membrane keyboards with full 4mm key travel, as government exam centers do not use low-profile laptop keyboards.
3. Pacing Over Speed: In CPCT and High Court exams, accuracy is evaluated strictly. A steady 32 WPM with 96% accuracy will comfortably qualify, whereas 45 WPM with 85% accuracy results in disqualification.
