1. What is the InScript Keyboard Layout?

InScript (Indian Script) is the official keyboard layout standardized by the Government of India for all 22 official Indian languages using Brahmic scripts (including Devanagari, Bengali, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam).

Because all Indian scripts share a common phonetic foundation, once you learn the InScript finger positions for Hindi Devanagari, you can easily type Marathi, Sanskrit, Nepali, and even adapt to other Indian scripts with minimal relearning.

2. The Scientific Linguistic Design

Unlike the historical English QWERTY layout, which was created to prevent mechanical typewriter jams, InScript was designed by linguists and computer scientists for maximum ergonomic typing efficiency:

  • Left Hand (Vowel Zone): All independent vowels (अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ) and their dependent matras (ा, ि, ी, ु, ू, े, ै, ो, ौ) are situated on the left side of the keyboard.
  • Right Hand (Consonant Zone): All consonants (क, ख, ग, घ, च, छ, ज, झ, ट, ठ...) are arranged systematically on the right side.
  • Alternating Hand Rhythm: Because Hindi syllables naturally alternate between consonants and vowels (e.g. क + ा = का), typing in InScript creates a rhythmic left-hand/right-hand alternation that reduces finger fatigue and prevents repetitive strain injuries.

3. Home Row Finger Assignment

Rest your fingers on the Home Row exactly as in standard touch typing:

Left Hand (Home Row):

  • Pinky (A): (Matra O) / Shift:
  • Ring (S): (Matra E) / Shift:
  • Middle (D): (Halant) / Shift:
  • Index (F): ि (Matra Chhoti Ee) / Shift:
  • Index Reach (G): (Matra Chhota U) / Shift:

Right Hand (Home Row):

  • Index Reach (H): / Shift:
  • Index (J): / Shift:
  • Middle (K): / Shift:
  • Ring (L): / Shift:
  • Pinky (;): / Shift:
  • Pinky Reach ('): / Shift:
The Halant Anchor (Key D)

The 'D' key (Middle Finger Left Hand) is the most critical key in InScript. It houses the Halant (्), which suppresses the inherent vowel sound of a consonant to form half-letters and complex conjuncts.

4. Vowels (Left Hand) & Consonants (Right Hand)

A core rule of InScript is the Shift vs Non-Shift relationship:

  • Typing a left-hand key without Shift produces the Matra (e.g. key Fि).
  • Typing that same key with Shift produces the Full Independent Vowel (e.g. key Shift + F).

Similarly, on the right hand:

  • Typing a consonant without Shift produces the unaspirated sound (e.g. key K).
  • Typing that same key with Shift produces the aspirated / breathy counterpart (e.g. key Shift + K).

5. Halant Rule and Conjunct Formation

To type half-characters and conjuncts in InScript, always follow the Consonant + Halant + Consonant sequence:

  • क्या: + + + (Keys: k + d + / + e)
  • सच्चा: + + + + (Keys: l + ; + d + ; + e)
  • प्रणाम: + + + + + (Keys: h + d + j + C + e + c)
  • ज्ञान: + + + + (Keys: p + d + } + e + v)

6. 4-Week InScript Mastery Roadmap

Follow this structured 4-week progression to reach 35+ WPM:

  • Week 1 (Home Row): Practice only Home Row keys (क, र, त, च, प, and matras ो, े, ि, ु). Do not look down at the keyboard.
  • Week 2 (Top & Bottom Rows): Introduce top row consonants (ग, ब, द, म) and bottom row nasal sounds (न, ण, म).
  • Week 3 (Shift Keys & Conjuncts): Master aspirated letters (ख, घ, थ, ध, फ) and Halant conjunct combinations.
  • Week 4 (Timed Passages): Practice 10-minute and 15-minute SSC exam passages to build sustained speed and high accuracy.
