Hindi Phonetic Typing Guide: How Transliteration Works (English to Hindi)

Phonetic typing (transliteration) allows you to type Hindi words using their approximate Latin/English phonetic spelling (often referred to as 'Hinglish').

As you type, an Input Method Engine analyzes the character buffer and converts phoneme sequences into their corresponding Devanagari Unicode characters. For example:

• bharat → भारत
• desh → देश
• swatantrata → स्वतंत्रता

Vowel sounds determine whether a short or long matra is produced:

• Short A sound: kamal → कमल
• Long AA sound: kaam or kAm → काम
• Short I sound: kiran → किरण
• Long EE / II sound: geeta → गीता
• Short U sound: kumar → कुमार
• Long OO / UU sound: pooja → पूजा
• E sound: kela → केला
• AI sound: paisa → पैसा
• O sound: mohan → मोहन
• AU / OU sound: aurat → औरत

Adding an h after a consonant produces its aspirated counterpart:

• k → क | kh → ख
• g → ग | gh → घ
• c or ch → च | chh → छ
• j → ज | jh → झ
• t → त | th → थ
• T (Capital) → ट | Th → ठ
• d → द | dh → ध
• D (Capital) → ड | Dh → ढ
• p → प | ph or f → फ
• b → ब | bh → भ

Typing two consonants without a vowel between them triggers an automatic Halant connection:

• kya → क्या
• prem → प्रेम
• krishna → कृष्ण
• dhanyawad → धन्यवाद
• namaste → नमस्ते
• gyan or jnan → ज्ञान
